Sounds like Facyson could get cut and the Raiders might bring in a veteran corner this week
With the preseason over and the NFL’s cutdown day looming on Tuesday, August 27th, the Las Vegas Raiders‘ attention turns to finalizing the 53-man roster. One veteran who could be a somewhat surprising cut is cornerback Brandon Facyson as he missed just about all of training camp and didn’t play in the preseason.
“Yeah, we got to get Brandon on the field,” head coach Antonio Pierce told reporters on Saturday. “I can’t even evaluate him because we haven’t had them out there. So, it’s just tough, and it’s put a lot of these younger corners out ahead. It’s good for them in preseason and training camp to get reps, but I’m not a believer in throwing young corners out there early if they’re not quite ready. So, it’d be good to get Brandon healthy.”
Facyson was in a similar situation last year. He missed most of camp with an injury and began the year on injured reserve and didn’t return until late December, only playing in three games.
In addition to the comments above, Pierce said Las Vegas’ cornerback room is “still a work in progress”. He also replied “If we can get better, then we can get better,” when asked if the team will be active on the waiver wire this week.
So, it certainly seems like the Raiders will be looking to add an experienced corner for a backup role at the least this week.

- Tyreik McAllister has big night: “McAllister gave the Raiders’ fans some excitement by taking a punt return 81 yards in for a score in the second quarter. It was a highlight of the preseason,” Silver and Black Pride’s Bill Williamson wrote. “He also had a 35-yard touchdown pass. McAllister…still may not make the team, but perhaps his big game will help him secure a spot on the practice squad.”
- 49ers quick slants: “Defensive linemen Charles Snowden, Byron Young, and Matthew Butler each racked up a sack for the Raiders,” via S&BP’s Ray Aspuria. “This was a welcome sight after Las Vegas didn’t register a single sack in the first two exhibition games.”
- Takeaways from final preseason game: “In a mild surprise, the Raiders did not dress defensive end Tyree Wilson, who has struggled to find his footing after being drafted seventh overall last year,” the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Vincent Bonsignore wrote. “Wilson isn’t in danger of being cut, but after his rookie season was derailed by the foot injury he suffered in his last year at Texas Tech, any reps he gets seem useful.”
