Silver Minings: Russell Wilson could be an option after the hiring of Pete Carroll

The connection between Wilson and Carroll could resurface with the Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders are about to enter a new era by hiring head coach Pete Carroll. The hire gives the Raiders a quality head coach with a history of winning and building a culture that is needed for the franchise.

With Carroll on board, the next cornerstone of the franchise that needs to be addressed is quarterback. After a year of Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew, the Raiders quarterback room needs an upgrade. New general manager John Spytek will work with Pete Carroll to find a signal caller who can help lead to victories on the field.

One of the most effortless connections with Carroll is Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson. Wilson helped lead the Steelers to the playoffs but struggled to end the season, with the team losing four in a row. The former Seattle Seahawk is now a free agent and could be an option for the Raiders. Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports wrote about the connection and the possibility of Wilson joining the silver and black.

That’s suddenly a realistic possibility. Partially because of Wilson’s Seattle Seahawks history with Carroll, but also because Wilson is a solidly productive veteran player Brady can count on to bridge the Raiders to their next starter. Not to mention that Wilson’s free-agent market will likely be limited enough to make him amenable to a short-term contract loaded with incentives rather than multiple years of guaranteed money.

Wilson wouldn’t be a long-term option, of course, and the Raiders might add a quarterback in the draft. Carroll has a history of pure competition and would have no problem going with the rookie over Wilson if he performs better in camp and the preseason. It will be a fluid situation with Carroll as the head coach that will help the Raiders make the best decision for the future.
