Husso, 29, brings experience to Anaheim after spending the past two seasons in Detroit. Originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 2014, the Finnish netminder broke into the NHL during the 2020-21 season and quickly established himself as a capable starting goaltender. His best season came in 2021-22 with the Blues when he posted a .919 save percentage and 2.56 goals against average (GAA) in 40 games, earning him a three-year, $14.25 million contract with the Red Wings. However, injuries and inconsistency plagued his tenure in Detroit, and he found himself in a crowded goaltending situation alongside Alex Lyon and James Reimer.
What it Means
For Anaheim, the addition of Husso provides goaltending depth, as John Gibson has been somewhat injury-plagued this season. While Gibson and Lukas Dostal remain the Ducks’ starting tandem, Gibson’s future with the team has been subject to trade speculation. Lukas Dostal has emerged this season as the number one going forward, but Anaheim will make sure they protect his usage. General Manager Pat Verbeek has shown a propensity to protect his assets with the way he handled Leo Carlsson‘s rookie season usage. Husso’s presence offers the Ducks a reliable veteran option who can backstop with the San Diego Gulls or serve as a safety net should injuries arise.
The “future considerations” aspect of the trade suggests that Detroit was primarily looking to offload Husso’s contract, which carries a $4.75 million cap hit through the end of this season. Anaheim, with ample salary cap space, was in a position to absorb the deal without significant repercussions.
