Minnesota Wild Defenceman Signs Huge Contract Extension

July 29, 2024 by Last Word On Hockey

The Minnesota Wild have re-signed their budding (or maybe he is already) star defenceman Brock Faber to a contract extension. Given the size of the deal, calling him a star in today’s game, definitely isn’t out of place. Faber signs the maximum allowable extension under the NHL’s collective bargain agreement with an eight-year deal. The deal sees him earn an annual average value of $8.5 million on the contract. Furthermore, this contract won’t kick in until next season, so it doesn’t expire until the conclusion of the 2032-33 campaign, at which time Faber will be 30 years of age.

The Minnesota Wild Sign Brock Faber to Eight-Year Contract Extension

As Brock Faber signs this monster contract extension with the Minnesota Wild, a quick review of his statistics shows there’s not much questioning his star status in the NHL already. He’s only played one full season in the NHL. However, he is already attracting attention as someone who could make the Team USA best-on-best roster. Also, he finished second in Calder Trophy voting to Connor Bedard.

In 2023-24 for the Wild, Faber played 82 games and saw an amazing 24:58 of average ice time. A number unheard of for an NHL rookie. He had eight goals and added 39 assists for 47 points as well. Moreover, he was even used in responsible, defensive situations for the Wild. His dZS% of 53.3, along with 150 blocked shots speak to that ability. Needless to say, this type of contract wasn’t a matter of if, but when, for the stud defenceman.

What Does He Mean for the Wild

The Minnesota Wild have firmly identified Faber as a franchise player. He is someone who is a part of the core already, and will continue to be for the distant future. With other youngsters like Matt Boldy and Marco Rossi there as well, they will help the more veteran players have the Wild in playoff contention for years to come.
