NHL Predictions March 29th Tampa Bay Lightning vs. New York Islanders

March 30, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

NHL Predictions

Welcome back to NHL Predictions here at Last Word on Hockey! This is where we break down matchups, analyze stats, and pretend we have the foresight of a veteran goalie in a shootout. Today, we are featuring the Tampa Bay Lightning vs. New York Islanders in a clash between high-octane offence and blue-collar grit. Expect goals, big hits, and at least half the crowd to still be stuck in traffic before the puck drops.

NHL Predictions featuring the Bolts and Isles

Season Series: Tampa Bay 0, New York 1
Time: Saturday, 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)
Location: Tampa, FL

Tampa Bay’s offence is hotter than a summer day in Florida, with no A/C. Nikita Kucherov is casually leading the league in points like it’s just another day that ends with the letter “y”. Brayden Point has been slicing through defences like they’re warm butter on a bagel. He’s scored 33 goals with 47 assists for the Lightning this season.

Lightning and their Keys to Victory

If the Lightning can push the pace and keep the Islanders on their heels, it’s game over. Their transition game thrives when they force turnovers, and the Isles aren’t exactly built for track meets. Think of them more as a patient chess player. Tampa will prefer a fast-paced game of checkers.

The Lightning have a 20-8-1 record in games they score one or more power play goals. The power play is still a cheat code. The Bolts are converting at nearly 29%, and when you give them time and space, Kucherov turns into a mad scientist. If Tampa draws a few early penalties, this could get lopsided in a hurry.

Islanders and their Keys to Victory

Let’s be real, the Islanders want this game to feel like walking driving through the streets of New York City. That is , slow, aggravating and you just want it to be over. Their whole system is built on defensive structure and frustration. And when it works, it really works. Up front, Mathew Barzal has been the spark plug. Bo Horvat has been a key part of the engine with 23 goals and 26 assists for the Islanders.  If the Isles can capitalize on second-chance opportunities, they’ll keep this close.

Ilya Sorokin will be the key. He’s been sharp lately, but he’ll need to stand on his head against a Tampa team that shoots like Neo and crew in a Matrix movie. If he can survive the first period and get into a rhythm, he gives the Isles a shot at stealing two points.

But let’s be clear, this isn’t going to be a run-and-gun affair. If the Islanders want a win, they’ll need to clog the neutral zone, take away Tampa’s time and space, and make this game a full-blown trench war. The uglier it gets, the better they feel.

NHL Predictions with the Lightning vs. the Islanders

It’s speed versus structure. Flash versus function. Category 5 hurricanes vs. Long Island diner coffee at 2 a.m.

Tampa Bay has the advantage in talent, special teams, and firepower. But the Islanders can lull you to sleep, then pounce like a cat hearing the treat bag crinkle. If this game stays close into the third period, the Isles could absolutely sneak it. That said, if Tampa gets rolling, it could be curtains. Our thoughts are that Tampa pulls away late after a tight-checking two periods.

Final Thoughts

Tampa wants to skate, create, and overwhelm you. The Islanders want to make you question why you even picked up a hockey stick in the first place. If the Lightning can strike early and force the Islanders to chase, they’re likely heading back to Florida with a win.

Prediction: Lightning 4, Islanders 2

Top Prop Bets

  • Nikita Kucherov – Goals – Over 0.5 (+130)
He’s hotter than the comments section of a Leafs Reddit thread. Bet on him to light the lamp if he gets any space.

  • Brayden Point – Shots on Goal – Over 2.5 (+110)
Point’s puck movement on the man advantage is lethal. One tap-pass from Kucherov and it’s in the back of the net.
