Ottawa Senators Goaltending Will Be Away from the Club

December 29, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The Ottawa Senators have some disappointing news to report today, but we do hope that in the long run, all is well, that ends well. It isn’t an injury, but Sens goaltender Linus Ullmark is taking a leave of absence from the club. The news comes a day after the Sens returned to action, following the short Christmas-time break.

Ottawa Senator Goaltender Linus Ullmark Takes a Leave of Absence

We don’t know what the issue is, but we know of Linus that he is aware of his own body, and when things aren’t right. If that is personal or family based, then we can take solace in the fact that Linus knows where to place his priorities. Needless to say, we hope he finds the help or support he needs.

One indicator that something was off with Ullmark was the unconventional four goals he surrendered on 14 shots in last night’s Saturday night game versus the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The words from general manager Steve Staios offer more recognition that Ullmark’s needs at this time are first-and-foremost.

“Linus has the full support of our organization during this time,” said Staios. “Out of respect to Linus, we will not be making any further comments.”

This has been a strange season for Ullmark and his Sens squad. Despite very poor goaltending statistics on the year, the team plays very well at five-on-five. Furthermore, the Sens have been competitive, and somewhat living up to their self-imposed expectations based on last season’s Stanley Cup Playoff appearance. It has helped that the Eastern Conference standings have been very tight, thus far.

The idea is that it is possible something has been off for Ullmark for longer. He missed a start earlier this season, for a similar reason against the Boston Bruins in November. But all we hope is that he takes care of himself, and only comes back when he’s ready.

The Senators Perspective

As of print, there was no indication of who would be recalled from the Sens AHL the Belleville Senators. Mads Sogaard has long been one of their top goaltending prospects. However, it is possible with his play in Belleville in 2025-26, Hunter Shepard or Jackson Parsons get the call, as well. Look for Leevi Merilainen to get the first call to play, but he would need rest if this is an extended hiatus.

Also, the 2026 Winter Olympic teams need to be named by December 31st. Ullmark is definitely a front-runner for Team Sweden selection. But he does have good competition, such as the Minnesota Wild duo. Filip Gustavsson and Jesper Wallstedt could very well both hear their name called.
