Ryan Johansen waivers

Some big news has emerged on Tuesday that the Philadelphia Flyers have placed forward Ryan Johansen on waivers on late Tuesday morning. A post from the team added that Johansen is being placed on waivers in order to terminate his contract. This post on social media added this is due to a material breach. However, there would be no further comment at the time.

Flyers Place Ryan Johansen on Waivers

Johansen has played for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators and Colorado Avalanche over his 13-year NHL career. Last season, he totaled 13 goals and 10 assists for 23 points in 63 games. Johansen had a Corsi for of 53.8 and a relative Corsi of 2.4

The Vancouver native has 202 goals and 376 assists for 578 points in 905 career games. Johansen was drafted fourth overall of the 2010 NHL Draft. His best goal-scoring season was when he notched 33 in the 2013-14 season with the Blue Jackets. He had his highest point total in a season with 71 in the 2014-15 campaign.

Johansen was traded to the Flyers by Colorado on March 6 and placed on waivers. He cleared and was assigned to Lehigh Valley of the AHL. However, he didn’t play at either level because of a hip injury.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman added that Johansen can appeal the termination. Friedman adds that the Flyers aren’t commenting on the situation, but will present if they have to. The injury could be at the centre of why Johansen may appeal.

What It Means

The 32-year-old has 60 days to appeal the decision and settlements usually occur when this happens. Johansen is in the final year of a contract that sees him make $8 million per season.

Both Philadelphia and Nashville were set to owe him $4 million after the Predators retained half of his salary when he was originally dealt to Colorado.

A settlement could possibly allow the Predators to get some salary cap relief. However, they’ll have to wait for the appeal process to play out.
