Report: Carolina Hurricanes Re-Sign Emerging Young Winger

August 31, 2024 by Last Word On Hockey

seth jarvis re-signs

Pending RFA Seth Jarvis has signed the line to re-sign with the Carolina Hurricanes for eight years at $63.2 million. This is a unique deal in that there is deferred compensation which makes the cap hit lower. Believed to be one of the first of its kind in the NHL. Coming off of his entry-level deal, this is a big move for Carolina to keep the young winger in Raleigh.

Sources: #Canes and Seth Jarvis have agreed to terms on an eight-year, $63.2 million contract.

It’s a fascinating deal – one that has the chance to be a precedent setter league-wide with a lower cap hit because of deferred money.

Seth Jarvis Re-Signs with Carolina

There are many free agents, both RFAs and UFAs, on Carolina’s list this summer. Possibly at the top of that list as a priority to re-sign was Seth Jarvis. And now that is done. Jarvis (22 years old), was a 2020 Hurricanes first-round draft pick. They acquired that pick by taking on Patrick Marleau‘s salary from the Toronto Maple Leafs. And it turned out to be pretty close to a home run of a pick. In his first three years in the NHL, Jarvis has put up 64 goals and 84 assists in 231 games. This includes 15 on the power play and three shorthanded. Most notable was his breakout year this past season. He broke the 30-goal mark by netting 33 and also getting 67 points. In 40 playoff games, he has 27 points that include 13 goals.

Jarvis is not the biggest player, but he is a ball of energy and not afraid to play a very physical game. He can play in all situations and almost with any linemates. He saw time on the team’s top line with Jake Guentzel and Sebastian Aho as well as the team’s third line with Jordan Martinook and Jordan Staal. Jarvis found success with both. Picked at 13th overall, he is fourth from his draft class in goals behind Tim Stutzle (third), Alexis Lafreniere (first) and Lucas Raymond (fourth) with less games played than each of them. This is great company for Jarvis to be among.

Moving Forward with Carolina

While it’s a little less risky for an RFA to leave, getting Jarvis signed is a big move for Carolina. There may be winds of change swirling in Raleigh but Jarvis is a cornerstone piece of this core moving forward. His age, stats, and maybe most importantly, his playing style that fits the team identity, all made him an absolute priority to re-sign this offseason. Now the two sides can put down the pens and paper and get back to focusing on the ice.
