The flurry of activity leading up to the start of the regular season continues. News emerged on Sunday afternoon that the San Jose Sharks and Philadelphia Flyers have made a deal. Philadelphia Flyers Make Ryan Ellis Trade with San Jose Sharks

Ellis hasn’t played since the 2021-22 season due to a plethora of injuries. However, he was once a highly-touted player from his days in major junior. Over his 11-year NHL career, Ellis played with the Nashville Predators and Flyers. He totaled 76 goals and 199 assists for 275 points in 566 career games.

Nashville originally drafted Ellis in the first round, 11th overall of the 2009 NHL Draft. He was part of the team Predators squad that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2017.

Grundstrom played in 56 games last season with San Jose. He tallied three goals and six assists for nine points. The Swede has also played for the Los Angeles Kings in his 292-game NHL career.

Guryev played for Wichita of the ECHL and was a fifth-round pick (135th overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft. He registered five points last campaign.

What It Means

The Sharks continue to stockpile contracts like they did with Carey Price in the offseason. San Jose seems to be taking contracts off people’s hands in order to get assets.

The Ellis deal is a sad way to see one of the league’s more underrated defenceman’s tenure to end. Ellis only played four games for the Flyers before suffering that injury.

The deal frees up $4.45 million for the coming season and $6.25 million one Grundstrom’s $1.8 million cap hit comes off the books. Philadelphia now has some cap flexibility in order to make some moves if needed.
