San Jose Sharks Sign Second Overall Selection

September 10, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The San Jose Sharks have signed another young prospect with promise. News emerged on Wednesday that forward Michael Misa signed his entry-level deal. This contract is for three years with a total value of $2.925 million. The contract has an average cap hit of $975,000 and his contract will run through the end of the 2027-28 season.

Michael Misa never considered playing in the NCAA despite taking a while to have his #SJSharks ELC signed. Read more on Sharks Hockey Digest.sharkshockeydigest.com/san-jose-sha…

Michael Misa Signed by San Jose Sharks

Misa posted 62 goals and 72 assists for 134 points in 65 games last season for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League. Those statistics were the best among skaters in all of the major junior system.

San Jose drafted Misa with the second overall pick of the 2025. Misa was taken right after the New York Islanders selected defenceman and Spirit teammate Matthew Schaefer with the top overall choice of the most-recent draft.

He isn’t the only Misa that is a prospect. His brother, Luke Misa, is in the Calgary Flames system. The elder Misa was taken in the fifth round and is going to play college hockey with Penn State.

What It Means

There were some thoughts that Michael Misa would join his brother at the NCAA level. However, Misa has signed his pro contract and will try to make it on the Sharks. If the younger Misa doesn’t stick with the big club, he will be loaned back to the Spirit.

Misa is not old enough to be in the American Hockey League, so he would go back to major junior. He could have a chance to help Saginaw go back-to-back in winning the Memorial Cup.

Misa inking his pro deal bucks the trend of draft picks going to the NCAA level. Players like Porter Martone, Brady Martin, Jake O’Brien and others ae taking advantage of the rule that allows players from major junior to play in the U.S. collegiate ranks.
