Veteran Forward Signs with Winnipeg Jets

July 3, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

The free agency signings keep coming at all hours of the night. News emerged that veteran forward Gustav Nyquist signed a one-year deal with the Winnipeg Jets. This contract has a salary cap hit of $3.25 million for the 2025-26 season.

Gustav Nyquist Signs One-Year Deal with Winnipeg Jets

Nyquist has played for the Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators and Minnesota Wild over his 13-year NHL career. Last season, he totaled 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points in 79 games for the Wild and the Predators. He averaged 16 minutes and 51 seconds of ice time between the two clubs. The 35-year-old had a Corsi for of 46.3 and a relative Corsi of -2.8.

Nyquist has 209 goals and 322 assists and 531 points in 863 career games. Detroit originally drafted him in the fourth round, 121st overall of the 2008 NHL Draft. The Halmstad, Sweden native had a standout career at the University of Maine. He led the team in scoring in all three seasons with the Black Bears.

The veteran forward has also represented his native Sweden at the international level. He won a silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics for his home country. Nyquist also won a bronze at the 2014 IIHF World Championships and a gold at the 2018 Worlds.

What It Means

This won’t replace Nikolaj Ehlers and his scoring production. However, this could be an underrated signing. Nyquist is a veteran with a ton of experiences. This is also a good low-cost deal at $3.25 million.

The contract is also just for one year, which is also a low-risk one. Jets General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff still has work to do in order to replace Ehlers. However, this move is a start.

Winnipeg will be hard-pressed to win the President’s Trophy again. However, the Jets are going to try to stay in the mix to stay in the race for a Stanley Cup Playoff spot.
